Our Approach

The Institute addresses the present lack of scalable and accessible solutions that would allow wide adoption of rigorous simulation game exercises, through the development of advanced digital systems that support both experts and non-experts in designing games to fit their organizational needs, run them professionally and analyze their outcomes.

Creating rigorous and effective simulation games and serious games to improve readiness and preparedness is a highly costly and time consuming activity, which requires highly specialized teams with knowledge that includes but is not limited to crisis management, simulation game and exercises design, learning engineering, cognitive engineering, risk management, domain and contextual knowledge.

Professional human resources are limited, jeopardizing game use and quality.

Through the use of innovative gaming approaches, CAPTRS Institute assists organizations worldwide in addressing complex challenges that span all domains, at different scales and threats of different nature.

CAPTRS Institute collaborates with an extensive network of renowned experts and universities worldwide in many different fields to ensure the transdisciplinarity degree needed in order to design innovative games that have the true potential to generate change. These fields include, but are not limited to:

Furthermore, we work closely with a wide range of domain experts that help us shape innovative effective solutions to the problems they are facing. The scientific knowledge, insights and best practices serve as reference guides for the creation of new effective and efficient preparedness games.

We support organizations worldwide to improve, modernize or build gaming capabilities that can help them exercise and prepare better against known and unanticipated threats.

The CAPTRS Institute aims at breaking the siloed approach currently present in different academic and practitioners game communities (serious gaming, wargaming, simulation gaming) and supports the wider effort of reconciling them under a wider game science umbrella.

The final goal is to enable a transition of the scientific knowledge about gaming currently available in restricted academic environments into the hands of policy makers, decision-makers and end-users to support emergency and crisis management.

In fact, the Institute promotes the adoption of gaming science as a necessary science that underpins emergency management preparedness and disaster risk reduction and is devoted at innovating preparedness through games.
